Is it possible to cut through veneer-covered particleboard from Ikea without ruining the whole board?

I am thinking of buying their "custom" Pax closet organization systems but the 2 sizes they have don't fit, so I want to cut through some of the panels and modify it. Has anyone tried this before? Any advice?
