Why do cats knead?

It is left over from when they were kittens kneading their mom to get more milk to come out. It is a comforting act to kittens and cats, so many cats carry it over to their adult lives. I have 3 cats but only 2 of my cats knead. I think it calms them and relaxes them (the ones who still do it as adults)
